Foundation partners firm to empower teachers
A foundation, Illmi Children’s Fund has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Peace Microfinance Bank to empower teachers in Nigeria.
The group in a statement by its Executive Director, Maryam Augue-Abdulmumin on Saturday, stated that financial support will be given to the teachers through its Cooperative organisation to help them perform better in the education sector.
According to the statement, the programme is in line with the organisation’s Training, Advocacy, Research, and Mentorship Initiative.
It read in part, “Even though TARM’s primary aim is to empower female teachers in their work with adolescent girls which they do through mentorship and training in the prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV) at home and school, the cooperative is more holistic and seeks to help both male and female teachers plan for a secure retirement.
“It will also empower teachers who become members to retire to a future of ease. ICF is committed to social impact through empowerment and entrepreneurship and we couldn’t pass off the golden opportunity that this partnership offered to do what we do best.”
On her part, the Bank’s Managing Director Judith Onyishi, said the initiative would go a long way in supporting the beneficiaries’ plan for a secure future.
“We are giving teachers access to financial tools and resources they need to plan for a secure future while strengthening their ability to continue to do their work wholeheartedly. We believe that teachers deserve a retirement plan that is dignifying and gives them hope.”
Late last year, BIC through its Canvas of Change, trained teachers from over 100 Lagos schools in effective teaching skills.
Also, a US government exchange alumnae-led organisation, Street to School Initiative, in collaboration with the US Consulate General, launched a teacher capacity-building workshop, tagged, ’Re-imagining EducationX 2021: The Teacher on the Move.”
