Navy’s Former Commandant States That 91,725 Barrels of Crude Oil Were Saved in 2023
Rear Admiral Murtala Bashir (Rtd.), the former Commandant of the Navy War College, revealed that the Nigerian Navy’s crackdown on oil theft resulted in saving 91,725.26 barrels of crude oil in 2023. Bashir shared this information during his presentation at the Naval Warfare Course 8 inauguration in Calabar on Monday.
Under the topic “Operational Level Warfare: Imperatives for Training and Command in the Nigerian Navy,” Bashir highlighted that this accomplishment contrasted with 889,890 barrels saved from thieves between January and December 2022.
Additionally, it was mentioned by Bashir that economic saboteurs were also prevented from taking 513,350 litres of kerosene in 2023. He further mentioned that within the same period, 351 illegal refining sites, 630 storage tanks, and 315 wooden boats were deactivated.
Moreover, 78 suspects, 35 vessels, and 13 trucks were apprehended between January and December 2023.
While expressing his appreciation for the Navy’s achievement, Bashir stressed the necessity for further action to minimize the activities of oil thieves.
He pointed out, “The aforementioned achievements and others were possible because most operational-level commanders displayed sterling personal qualities, such as diligence, commitment, courage, knowledge, foresight, the ability to take risks, the ability to delegate authority, and respect for subordinates, among others.”
Bashir also commended the Navy for removing the country from the International Maritime Organization’s list of High-Risk Countries.
He emphasized, “For so many years, Nigeria’s maritime area was plagued by piracy, with the area regarded as a High-Risk Area, alongside the Gulf of Aden and other notorious areas by the IMO.
“It is noteworthy to say that the Flag Officer Commanding the operational commands doubled his efforts by being proactive.
“They invested more in intelligence and collaborating with other stakeholders, which led to coordinated and sustained operations in their individual areas of responsibilities with occasional overlaps.
“Many of the pirates were arrested ashore, either while planning their operations or when they returned after operations.”
Bashir advocated for optimizing the operational level of Naval Warfare Training to produce professional officers capable of translating strategic directives into precise tactical actions.
He also emphasized that these officers should be apolitical, responsive to national security priorities, efficient in resource utilization, committed to upholding the law, and respectful of human rights to gain public trust, respect, and confidence.
In a report by PUNCH on October 26, it was revealed that the Nigerian Navy apprehended eight oil thieves in a wooden boat with over 300 drums and pumping machines intended for storing stolen crude oil.
Subsequently, on December 7, the Nigerian Navy announced the arrest of a 77-meter-long Motor Tanker Vinnalaris 1 Lagos, carrying 17 crew members. The vessel was seized for illegally siphoning crude oil from one of the well heads at EBESAN oil field about seven nautical miles off the coast of Awoye riverine community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
