They Want To Assassinate Me For Supporting Fubara -Rivers Factional Speaker

Published

on

There was furore in Rivers State on Monday following the alarm raised by the camp of Edison Ehie, the factional Speaker loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara that there was an assassination attempt on him.

Ehie later confirmed the attack alleging that security operatives and thugs led by one SP Irefeike London and DSP Masarachi, tried to break into his house in Port Harcourt with the motive of killing him and members of his family.

The factional Speaker said he had become a target for attack for standing with Governor Fubara and fighting against anti-democratic forces.

Narrating the incident, he said: โ€œYesterday at about 11pm, I had closed the engagement, I moved upstairs and we had put the children to bed and I was interacting with my wife when we got alerted by the security attached to me that there was an attempted invasion by men in mofty and some in uniform.

โ€œI quickly got up from the room and came downstairs and not too long we started hearing the noise of the attempt by these security men in their Hilux vehicles to forcefully gain entrance into my residence but they were repelled by the security personnel.

โ€œAnd to our greatest surprise, these security operatives led by one SP Irefeike London and DSP Masarachi ordered their men and they started shooting sporadically.

โ€œIn fact, you can confirm from the neighbours in this vicinity that nobody could sleep last night. But to the glory of God the security operative ably resisted them. And when my domestic staff went up and brought out his phone and started to shout that he was recording them they fled.

โ€œTill now my family is in shock. My wife and my two little children are still in shock. It is so painful that people can go to that level. My children cannot go to school. They did not sleep last night because of the shockโ€.

Stating the motive for the attack, he said: โ€œFor whatsoever reason which of course we all know is connected to the political upheavals in the state they do not care about peopleโ€™s family they now attack because obviously the plan was to forcefully enter into my residence, shoot and maybe kill everybody.

*But there is something about me which maybe their sponsor did not tell them. Everybody who knows me knows that I am dead to fear because I believe that the only thing you can kill is the flesh but you can not kill the spirit, nothing scares me.

โ€œAll these started after what happened on the 30th of October when some self-serving lawmakers, who are elected to represent their constituencies and ensure dividends of democracy, make laws including oversight functions, attempted in a Machievellian way impeach governor elected to represent millions of Rivers People. That is a joke taken too far, for goodness sake.

โ€œAnd of course, the governor and chief security officer of the state getting wind of what happened at the Assembly complex went there to ascertain the level of damage and I went with him in his entourage and we all saw the humiliation by the police officers led by the DC Operations.

โ€œWe were teargassed in an attempt to intimidate us but we know that everyman dies but once. And if it is the prize we have to pay for democracy then let us pay it for the price for the future of our children.

โ€œAnd since after that day because we stood behind the governor to say evil can not reign over good in Rivers State. I have come under attacks, threats, especially after I was elected Speaker of the 10th Rivers House of Assembly.

โ€œI and my family have been under threats, false allegations have suddenly started springing up against me, and other of our supporters who are on the side and part if justiceโ€.

Ehie said there was a plot to link him to insecurity in the state including the brutal killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Bako Angbasim, in charge of Ahoada-East, his local government areas.

But he said: โ€œIt is important to state that the kingdom and area where the killing of SP Bako Angbashim occurred is not my constituency. I do not represent that constituency.

โ€œThere is another assembly member representing that constituency and there is a local government chairman who receives security votes. So you see that they are just going in vein to see how to connect some of us to say why have we not made attempts to intervene in the insecurity there.

โ€œBut it is on records that I made one of the first press release, I wrote a passionate letter to the commissioner of police which was acknowledged and we copied other sister agencies.

โ€œThey are just labouring in vein moving towards the left and right. And I ask them how come suddenly you now want to heap a lot of allegations on some of us. This has happened months ago, police have investigated, extracted necessary information, concluded investigation even charged the suspects to court.

โ€œAnd those charged to court have been remanded in prison custody subject to the matter. This is because of our support. We have got information that they are trying to plant arms and ammunition at my house in the village. This is how desperate they are.

โ€œBut if I am asked whether I will support the governor again, I will say yes 100 pee cent. Evil can never reign over justice. I stand with the Governor of Rivers State, sir. Siminalayi Fubara, who was voted in by Rivers people. No threat, nothing, no allegation now or in future will deter my positionโ€.

But the Commissioner of Police, CP. Olatunji Disu, said preliminary investigations revealed that there was no assassination attempt on Ehie, whom he identified as the leader.

The CP said: โ€œThe preliminary investigations we have done so far, this morning, have not revealed any assassination attempt, all I knew was that Police officers were on patrol, convoy patrol, Itโ€™s a routine thing and then we have made frantic efforts to get across to the leader to give us any information he has, so that we can include it in what we already have. So far so good, nothing to worry about.

โ€œMy plead to him and every other person is, if there is any complain, my number is going to be made public, they should call me quickly and I will quickly look into it. For now, I havenโ€™t gotten anything like thatโ€.

Akeredolu: Calls Intensified To Declare Ondo governor Incapacitated

Published

on

For the past couple of weeks, the call for the resignation of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has been growing louder as the governor continues to govern Ondo State from far away Ibadan in Oyo State.

The governor has been in Ibadan since he returned from a medical trip in Germany and many in the state believe that governance in the Sunshine State has been on auto-pilot.

Akeredolu left Nigeria on June 13, 2023, for medical treatment in Germany and spent about three months before he returned to Nigeria on September 9. He had earlier notified the Ondo State House of Assembly that he would be taking a 21-day leave and transmitted power to his deputy to govern in an acting capacity.

Upon his return, the governor is yet to set foot in Akure, the state capital, instead, he is staying at his personal residence in Ibadan.

The First Lady, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has been accused of pulling the strings to allow the husband to continue the stay in power despite the reported ill health.

Ondo State has been in political turmoil since the governor returned from his medical trip as his loyalists are making frantic efforts to remove the deputy governor of the state for actions taken during the absence of Mr Akeredolu.

Move to impeach Deputy Governor

Lucky Aiyedatiwa is currently fighting to survive the ongoing political battle as loyalists of Mr Akeredolu are making moves to remove him.

The travails of the deputy governor commenced when Mr Akeredolu returned to the country, and all media aides in the office of the deputy governor were sacked.

The loyalists of the governor in the State Assembly listed 14 offences committed by Mr Aiyedatiwa, including โ€œgross misconduct, abuse of office with actions likely to bring down Ondo State Government, financial recklessness, publication in print media by your media aides maligning the credibility of the Governor, etcโ€.

The impeachment move has sidelined the deputy governor, who has been fighting in the courts.

The intervention by the National Working Committee of the APC appears to have slowed down the move but the deputy governor seems to have been relegated completely.

However, in the past couple of weeks, the attention has shifted away from the deputy governor to Mr Akeredolu. Ironically, the governor, who was the President of the Nigerian Bar Association during the sickness of Umar Musa Yarโ€™Adua, was very vocal in the call for the resignation of the then-president over his health.

โ€œNo matter how much you love your country, it should not be at the detriment of your health. It is not your party or your wife that will decide whether you are capable of handling state matters; it is only your doctors that can decide that. The bar is not asking the president not to come back and take his seat, but the right thing must be done,โ€ Akeredolu had said in 2010.

Steps to declare Akeredolu incapacitated

Kennedy Peretei, the National Publicity Secretary of the Ondo State PDP, had called for the impeachment of the governor for violating the constitution.

โ€œThe time has come for the Ondo State House of Assembly to immediately begin the impeachment process of Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, for violation of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

โ€œIt is no longer news that Ondo State has been on auto-pilot for nearly six months, grounding all activities of the government due to the ill health of the Governor,โ€ he said in a statement.

However, the Assembly has consistently defended Mr Akeredolu and ignored any call for action.

According to legal experts, in the case of health challenges, the first move to remove the governor must start from the commissioners, who have the power to declare that the governor is incapacitated.

Rasheed Bakare, a legal practitioner in Abuja, explained to DAILY POST that Section 189 of the 1999 constitution provides the steps to be taken before a governor or deputy governor can be declared incapacitated to continue in that office.

According to section 189 of the Nigerian Constitution, only the commissioners of Ondo State can trigger the process of declaring Mr Akeredolu incapacitated.

The first step is that 2/3 of the state executive council must resolve that the Governor is incapacitated to continue in office.

โ€œ189. (1) The Governor or Deputy Governor of a State shall cease to hold office if, by a resolution passed by a two-thirds majority of all members of the executive council of the State, it is declared that the Governor or Deputy Governor is incapable of discharging the functions of his office,โ€ the constitution reads in part.

See alsoย  AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY ISSUES IMPORTANT NOTICE ON ILLEGAL TRADING IN THE UNIVERSITY PREMISES

After the resolution by the body of commissioners, the constitution provides that the speaker must set up a panel to examine the health status of the governor.

The medical panel must comprise five medical practitioners, including the physician of the governor. The panel must determine that the โ€œGovernor or Deputy Governor is suffering from such infirmity of body or mind as renders him permanently incapable of discharging the functions of his office, a notice thereof signed by the Speaker of the House of Assembly shall be published in the Official.โ€

Once the report has been submitted to the speaker, it must be published and the governor is officially removed.

Mr Bakare told DAILY POST that as the law stands, it is going to be difficult to remove Mr Akeredolu or any other governor in Nigeria on the basis of section 189.

According to the legal practitioner, since the Governor appointed the commissioners, it will be hard for them to recommend the removal of their boss.

โ€œThe challenge with section 189 is that it is hard to see a commissioner that will say โ€˜My boss, the governor is sick and unable to perform, so let us pass a vote to that effectโ€™. It is hardly done. In fact, that provision needs amendment.

โ€œWho appoints the commissioners? The governor. For them to pass a vote against the governor, owing to the infirmity of the mind or bodyโ€” they wonโ€™t. It hardly occurs,โ€ he said during a phone interview.

Last week, 33 out of the 35 State Executive Council members passed a vote of confidence on the ailing governor and declared their loyalty to him.

Only the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Razak Obe, and the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, and Cooperative Services, Akin Sowore did not sign the document.

There are indications that politicians in the state prefer to wait for the next election which is in November 2024. The primary election is scheduled for April next year.
