The Concern of NANS over Soaring Inflation and Economic Hardship
Nigerian students’ apex body, the National Association of Nigerian Students, has expressed deep concern over the escalating inflation and economic hardship prevailing in the country.
NANS has raised an alarm regarding the impact of the current state of the economy, emphasizing that it poses a threat to the financial stability of students.
Akinteye Babatunde, the President of the NANS Senate, conveyed these worries in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday.
Babatunde highlighted the profound effects of inflation on students, as the soaring costs of imported educational materials, tuition fees, and transportation expenses have substantially exacerbated the challenges of student life.
It’s worth noting that manufacturers had earlier forecasted an imminent surge in commodity prices in the market due to the sustained devaluation of the naira against the US dollar.
The naira had plummeted to N1,420/$ in the parallel window of the foreign exchange market.
“A gathering storm is looming in the educational sphere, posing a serious threat to the aspirations of students nationwide. The surge in the dollar’s value has cast a dark shadow, creating far-reaching repercussions beyond just economic realms. The hyperinflation gripping the nation not only inflates the cost of goods and services but also poses a severe threat to the financial stability of the students, who are the bedrock of the future,” expressed Babatunde.
He decried the spike in the cost of living, which has left students grappling with financial strain and uncertainty, underscoring that “This is more than just a matter of economic fluctuations; it’s a poignant issue with profound implications for education.”
Urging the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria to acknowledge and tackle the current challenges faced by Nigerians, especially students, Babatunde called for a stabilized exchange rate.
“Addressing and combating hyperinflation is of utmost importance. Strategies need to be formulated and executed to avert further erosion of students’ purchasing power. Unchecked inflationary trends pose a direct threat to the very foundation on which education relies.
“Recognizing the distinct challenges encountered by students, we appeal for the initiation of a targeted relief plan. This plan should directly alleviate the financial burdens on students, ensuring that their academic pursuits are not disrupted by economic uncertainties,” stressed the NANS leader.
