Property worth millions of naira destroyed by fire in Kwara

On Monday, a devastating fire outbreak in Ilorin, Kwara State’s capital, left over 120 people homeless and destroyed property worth millions of naira.

The spokesperson of the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, reported that the first fire incident occurred around 11:08am.

The Kwara State Fire Service promptly responded to a fire outbreak at Megida Onikanhun Compound, Edun Isale, Ilorin South Local Government Area.

Upon arrival, the firefighters found the entire compound and Edun Market engulfed in flames due to delay in receiving the call for assistance. They had to dismantle part of the fence for better access to enhance their firefighting efforts.

An additional message was sent to the brigade headquarters at 11:22am for more manpower, and within an hour, the proficient firefighters successfully brought the situation under control before completely extinguishing the fire.

An investigation revealed that the fire originated from someone setting refuse on fire, which was initially mistaken for harmless smoke but unfortunately spread to the nearby compound.

Head of Department of Media, Hassan, expressed condolences to Magaji Megida Onikanhun’s representative, Kuranga Yunus Adebayo, and commended the fire service’s efforts. He noted that the fire incident left over 120 occupants homeless, affected 44 rooms and a mosque in the 75-room Magaji Onikanhun’s Compound, with no casualties reported.

In response to the disaster, the Federal Fire Service, officers from the Department of Disaster Management, NSCDC, State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps were present to ensure crowd control and prevent potential looting, safeguarding both market goods and the firefighters.

The Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, urged the public to prioritize safety and promptly call the fire brigade in case of fire emergencies, emphasizing that this timely action can save lives and properties in the state.

Visiting three state governors, Super Eagles winger Moses Simon received a warm welcome during his visits to Benue, Kaduna, and Plateau states this week.

Simon, who was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that secured a silver medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, was applauded by Governor Hyacinth Alia for portraying the positive image of Benue state during the tournament.

Born and raised in Kaduna, the former KAA Gent star was also received by Governor Uba Sani, who expressed gratitude on behalf of the state’s residents for his efforts in empowering youth through his Simoiben Academy.

Delta CP takes action against senior officer for N2.4m extortion

The Divisional Crime Officer at the Abraka Division, SP Ibrahim Ishaku, has been removed by the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, due to an extortion case involving N2,465,000.

A statement released on Wednesday by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, revealed this decision.

The statement mentioned, “The Commissioner of Police Delta State CP Abaniwonda Olufemi on receipt of this disturbing report directed the DPO Abraka to report at the headquarters alongside the DCO 2 SP Ibrahim Ishaku.

“The CP after getting brief of the disturbing incident immediately ordered the removal of the DCO 2 SP Ibrahim Ishaku with immediate effect and the officer issued a query for misconduct.”

In the statement, the CP emphasized that the command under his watch will deal decisively with any recalcitrant officer who carries out any form of misconduct, extortion, or incivility to members of the public while hoping that this will serve as a deterrent to others.

PUNCH Online reports a similar event, as the Rivers State Police Command, on Wednesday, announced the dismissal of one Inspector Michael Odey over his involvement in a $3,000 extortion case.

Odey alongside two Assistant Superintendents of Police, Doubara Edonyabo and Talent Mungo, were accused of kidnapping and extorting two men.

Troops Uncover Illegal Weapons Factory in Plateau State amidst Insecurity

Operation Save Haven troops under Hakorin Damisa IV have recently discovered a weapon manufacturing facility in Pakachi Village, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigerian Army Headquarters announced on Wednesday.

The finding came as a result of clearance operations on a difficult mountainous terrain in the area.

During the mission, the army recovered a significant amount of illegal firearms and related equipment, leading to the apprehension of one suspect.

According to the official post, 25-year-old Mr. Tapshak Plangji was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the illegal activities at the factory, while the alleged owner, Mr. Nuhu Meshack, is currently evading authorities.
