LASUTH Not Culpable For Patient’s Missing Intestines — Mgt

The management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja has once again absolved itself of the allegation that it is culpable in the case of a 12-year-old boy’s missing intestines.

This was revealed in an official statement via X, formerly Twitter, and signed by the hospital management on Saturday.

The boy’s mother, Deborah Abiodun, had told a national newspaper that her son’s small intestines were missing.

In an SoS message to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, she begged him to as a matter of urgency, probe the mysterious disappearance of her 12-year-old son, Adebola Akin-Bright’s small intestines, which she claimed occurred while he was receiving treatment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital – an allegation the hospital management refuted in a statement via X, (formerly Twitter), on August 12, 2023.

According to her, she was thrown into confusion when surgeons at LASUTH informed her that her son’s small intestines were missing after a corrective surgery was performed on him on July 14, 2023.

She added that her son was referred to LASUTH from a private hospital, Obitoks Medical Centre, located at Ile-epo in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State on June 17, after complications from surgery to correct intestinal obstruction.

However, on Saturday, September 2, the management of LASUTH once again came out to affirm that they did not wilfully remove any organ or structure from Abiodun’s body while performing the corrective surgery.

The management stressed that the hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, and highly knowledgeable, skilled and professional medical consultants who would never make such medical errors.

The statement reads; “Once again, the hospital management needs to clarify issues on the insinuations being made by a mother in a viral video that the alleged loss of her son’s intestines after surgery is a matter between a private hospital and LASUTH. Our hospital is an excellent tertiary institution with highly knowledgeable and skilled medical consultants.

“We are also equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The patient in question was referred to our hospital after having two surgeries carried out in a private hospital.”

The management also noted that besides the surgery being carried out by an experienced paediatric surgeon and supported by her team of professionals, video clips of the surgery were available for further clarification and avoidance of doubts.

The statement further reads, “He required extensive optimisation in our facility before a corrective surgery could be carried out. At the surgery, which was carried out by an experienced pediatric surgeon and her team certain strange findings were discovered. There is a video clip of these intraoperative findings. The mother was informed about these findings but she appeared to be in denial.

“The hospital is in possession of a comprehensive report of the findings by a high-powered panel that it quickly set up to look into all ramifications of this case.

“Clearly, our hospital carried out a corrective surgery and did not wilfully remove any organ or structure. We empathise with the family of the patient. We believe that financial assistance from any quarters will be in order but we do not think that a blackmail of the state government via social media is the best approach.

“The hospital management is cooperating with the state agency which is already investigating this rather unfortunate case.”

ASUU SET TO COMMENCE INDEFINITE STRIKE NEXT WEEK

Published

on

The Academic Staff Union of Universities  (ASUU) has officially announced the decision to embark on an indefinite strike starting next week.

This announcement comes as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) prepares for a nationwide indefinite strike, set to commence on October 3rd, 2023.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), a prominent umbrella body for workers in Nigeria, has also declared an indefinite strike, set to commence on October 3rd, 2023.

The NLC’s decision comes in response to various grievances, including concerns over fuel price hikes, electricity tariff increases, and calls for improved living conditions for Nigerian workers.

It’s important to note that ASUU is under the NLC umbrella, and their decision to embark on an indefinite strike aligns with the broader nationwide action called by the NLC.

This coordinated effort amplifies the call for improved conditions not only in the education sector but also across various sectors of the Nigerian workforce.

The coming days will be instrumental in determining the course of action, and stakeholders will be watching closely as efforts to address these concerns unfold.

SSANU SETS TO JOIN NLC STRIKE ACTION THIS WEEK

Published

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has said it will join the proposed strike of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

Recently, the NLC and Trade Union Congress declared an indefinite strike action from October 3, 2023, to protest the insensitivity of the government in providing palliatives to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy.

SSANU, in a communique issued at the end of the 45th regular National Executive Council, held at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, and made available to The PUNCH on Sunday, read, “NEC in session after due deliberations agreed that SSANU as an affiliate of the NLC, will join the strike to protest the insensitivity of government in providing palliatives to cushion the effects of removal of fuel subsidy.

NEC, therefore, mandated all branches to mobilise her members to join the strike as declared as the demands before government also includes the release of withheld salaries of university workers.”

The communique, signed by the SSANU national president, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, complained that it felt seriously agitated by the report of the ad hoc Committee of Pro-Chancellors of state-owned universities, which among other things, recommended that state universities should not participate in nationwide industrial actions.

“It was obvious that SSANU complied with all legal provisions including giving adequate notices to the appropriate authorities but were forced to embark on that strike due to the government’s failure to honour her part of the agreement.

“SSANU, therefore, earnestly requests the government to pay the withheld salaries without any further delay considering the harsh economic realities currently faced by citizens in the country as the government is aware, the value for the money has already been eroded by hyperinflation.”

“NEC recalled the renegotiation of salaries for her members with the committee led by the late Professor Nimi Briggs that was at the final stage where SSANU demanded 700 per cent wage increase but the committee offered a 23.5 per cent and 35 per cent review to our members,” it read.
