Just In: Dapo Abiodun Orders Demolition Of Gbenga Daniel’s Five-Storey Plaza
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun has demolished the DATKEM Plaza, owned by Olufunke Daniel, wife of former governor Gbenga Daniel and incumbent senator representing Ogun East.
In a statement, Olusegun Lawal, the Project Manager and Developer for the building, revealed that the demolition of the five-storey building located at Folagbade Street, Ijebu-Ode, was carried out at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Mr Lawal said that the building, which had been under construction since 2009, had the full approval from the state government and was scheduled for commissioning by the end of September before the demolition, adding that the building had no structural or quality issues.
He disclosed that the third floor of the now demolished building was to house the Ogun East Senatorial Office.
The demolition comes as rumours proliferate about a raging rift between the incumbent governor and former governor Daniel now senator for Ogun East.
It was unclear when the rift began, as Mr Daniel backed Mr Abiodun for governor in 2019. But as 2023 election drew closer, there were suggestions that Mr Daniel did not openly back Mr Abiodun’s reelection, but instead worked quietly to support Ladi Adebutu, the candidate of opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
Speaking to Peoples Gazette, Mr Lawal said the demolition was “very shocking, very cruel and a heinous act committed by someone who is supposed to be saving our lives and properties; by somebody who is supposed to protect the rule of law in this state.”
He added that, as the developer of the building, everything that was required from state government officials was done, therefore, the demolition was shocking.
“We’ve done what was needful from our side regarding this project. They complained of contravention and we made amendment to the approval, submitted since last year. This is a building that’s almost two years now. Every queries raised, we answered them.
“When they partially sealed us, they asked us to pay unsealing fee of half a million (N500,000) which I paid. They received it and the next thing they did was to give us a letter in which they said within 24 hours, the amendment submitted doesn’t confirm with what we’re building. I said can we perform magic in this life?”
Neither the governor nor the senator has publicly acknowledged an ongoing feud, and their respective spokespersons did not immediately return our requests seeking comments on Sunday morning.
Today’s development, provoked or not, is all but assured to escalate their rancour into the public glare.

The Federal Government has increased the salaries for academic and non-academic staff of its tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education by 25 per cent.
It confirmed the approval of the new percentage increment in salaries through the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission (NSWIC).
A letter obtained by The Nation signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of the NSWIC, Ekpo Nta to the Minister of Education on September 14, 2023, with the title: ‘RE: Implementation of the 35% and 23.5% salary increment for staff of tertiary institutions,’ reads: “I refer to your letter No. FME/IS/UNI/ASUU/CII/IIIT2/90 dated 8th September 2023 in respect of the above-subject. Find attached the circulars pertaining to the four salary structures in the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education for your information (attached).
“The 23.5 per cent earlier reflected in our letter SWC/S/04/S.149/I/59 of 28 July 2022 and stated in paragraph 2 of your letter, has been increased to 25 per cent which accounted for the increased cost implications.
“This Commission is really pleased with the success your informal discussions have achieved. We shall endeavour to support all your efforts aimed at repositioning the education sector. Please accept the assurances of my warm regards.”
Another letter from the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation (OAuGF) dated September 21, 2023 also confirmed the increment.
The letter which was signed on behalf of the Director of Human Resource of the OAuGF, Ajanaku F.O reads: “I am directed to inform you that the Presidential Committee on Salaries at it’s 13th meeting having taken into consideration the different stages of collective bargaining in various sectors and specifically engagements between the Federal Ministry of Education and Tertiary Institutions-based Unions and consequently the Federal Government’s approval, is hereby conveyed as revised for the following:
“Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Salary Structure for Academic Staff of Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education with effect from 1st January, 2023.
“Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure II for non-Academic Staff of Federal Universities, with effect from 1st January, 2023.
“Consolidated Tertiary Education Institutions Salary Structure for non–Academic Staff of Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, with effect from 1st January, 2023.
“Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure II (CONUASS II) for Academic Staff of Federal University with effect from 1st January, 2023.”

UNIVERSITY OF JOS (UNIJOS) RELEASES APPROVED UNDERGRADUATE SCHOOL CHARGES, EXTEND PAYMENT DEADLINE DATE
In view of its commitment to carry all stakeholders along following the University’s earlier decision to review its School Charges structure, the University Administration has made additional concessions in response to its engagement with the Students representatives.
Some of the key decisions resulting from the interaction between the University Administration and the Students representatives include the following:
1. The main charges for Returning Students who are not offering GST courses have been reduced from N150,000.00 to N95,000.00 while N100,000.00 will be paid by Returning Students offering GST courses.
2. Fresh Students will now pay N130,000.00, down from the initial charge of N180,000.00.
3. Laboratory/Studio/Workshop charges are now set at N25,000.00 for Students who exclusively use these facilities down from N30,000.00.
4. The University Administration has also approved for Instalment payments to be introduced as follows:
– All Returning Students not using laboratory/studio/workshop facilities and not offering GST courses are to pay N95,000.00 as the 1st instalment and N10,000.00 as the 2nd instalment.
– All Returning Students not using laboratory/studio/workshop facilities but who offer GST courses are to pay N100,000.00 as the 1st instalment and N10,000.00 as the 2nd instalment.
– All Returning Students without GST courses but who use laboratory/studio/workshop facilities are to pay N95,000.00 as the 1st instalment and N35,000.00 as the 2nd instalment.
– All Returning Students who use laboratory/studio/workshop facilities and offer GST courses are to pay N100,000.00 as the 1st instalment and N35,000.00 as the 2nd instalment.
– New Students not using laboratory/studio/workshop facilities but who offer GST courses are to pay N130,000.00 as the 1st instalment and N10,000.00 as the 2nd instalment.
– New Students who will use laboratory/studio/workshop facilities and who offer GST courses are to pay N130,000.00 as the 1st instalment and N35,000.00 as the 2nd instalment.
5. Similarly, Two percent (2%) of the amount payable by all Students will be dedicated to assisting indigent Students, with 50% being channeled towards providing scholarships for indigent Students and the other 50% to be utilized for the expansion of the University’s Work-Study programme.
6. Spilled over Students (having one Semester left to complete their studies) will be required to pay only 50% of the reviewed charges.
7. The deadline for the registration exercise has been extended by a further 2 weeks. The new deadline is now 8th October, 2023.
8. Two of the Students leaders, the SUG President and 1 nominee of the Hall Governors, will serve as members of the Hostels Maintenance Committee.
In light of the above decisions, the University Administration advises all Students and Parents to take note of the revised charges and adhere to the new payment and registration guidelines. All Students should also note that 1st Semester lectures for the 2022/2023 Academic Session have since commenced.
Furthermore, the University Administration has approved the re-opening of the Naraguta, Zion, and Postgraduate hostels from Friday, 22nd September, 2023, for Students interested in seeking accommodation on campus. However, Abuja and Village hostels will remain closed until minor repairs are completed.
The University of Jos remains focused on providing an excellent learning experience and supporting its Students in achieving their academic and career goals. The University Administration is, therefore, committed to being transparent and accountable in the management of the University’s resources as it continues to strengthen areas of common interest and deepen partnership with the Students and other stakeholders.
