Chicago Academic Record: Tinubu’s Lawyers Kick As Court Orders Release
Justice Nancy Maldonado has upheld the judgment of Magistrate Judge, Jeffrey Gilbert in ordering Chicago State University to release President Bola Tinubu’s records to Atiku Abubakar.
Justice Maldonado made the ruling on Saturday, September 30 according to the release posted by the District Court of the Northern District of Illinois, U.S., meaning that President Tinubu’s appeal to stop the release of the documents had failed.
The Chicago State University (CSU) will now proceed this week to release relevant non-privileged documents on Monday 2 October.
The deposition by CSU will take place on Tuesday October 3.
Justice Maldonado in the 33 page ruling stated:
“The court overrules President Tinubu’s objections to Magistrate Judge Gilbert’s recommended ruling and therefore adopts the ruling in full.
“Mr Abubakar’s application is therefore granted.
“In light of the pending Supreme Court of Nigeria deadline, represented to the court as October 5, 2023 and based on CSU’s representations that it is ready to comply with the discovery requests and produce a witness, the court sets an expedited schedule for completion of discovery.
“Respondent CSU is directed to produce all relevant and non-privileged documents in response to requests for Production Nos-1 through 4( as narrowed by Judge Gilbert and adopted here) in Mr. Abubakar’s subpoena by 12.00p.m(noon) CDT on Monday October 2, 2023. The Rule 30(b)( 6) deposition of CSU’s corporate designeee must be completed by 5.00pm CDT on Tuesday October 3, 2023.
“Given the October 5, 2023 filing deadline before the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the court will not extend or modify these deadlines”
Atiku’s wish to get an authenticated certificate of Tinubu’s diploma will not be among the documents that CSU will be releasing to him as CSU said diplomas certificates are ceremonial, and they don’t retain copies of students’ certificates, not just for Mr. Tinubu but for all students. So, they can’t authenticate it without having a copy of the original certificate.
The main documents CSU will be producing on Monday are the documents certified by Jamar Orr and was tendered at the Nigerian Tribunal on July 6th, which is already in the public domain.
Among these documents are Tinubu’s admission letter to the school and his transcripts.
Also, Jamar Orr, who certified those documents, will be doing an oral deposition on Tuesday. He will swear on oath confirming he certified those documents that were submitted at the Tribunal.

Nigeria@63: My Husband Is Not A Magician – Remi Tinubu Tells Nigerians
The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, says her husband, President Bola Tinubu, is not a magician but is working to fix the country.
Mrs Tinubu stated this on Sunday in Abuja during her remarks at the interdenominational church service to mark Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary, with the theme: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
She said the Tinubu administration inherited the situation on the ground but is willing to fix things without putting blame on any administration.
“All we inherited are things that had happened many years ago; we are not here to put blame on any administration but to fix what has been damaged.
“My husband is not a magician; he is going to work and I believe and hope that we will have peace in this country; the best is yet to come to us,” she said.
She reiterated her husband’s determination to fix all that had been damaged in the country.
“Good governance can only be impactful if the people follow the example of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who embodied the fruit of the spirit, including love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance and forgiveness.
“A Nigeria of abundance has begun, and to be part of the greatness that God has started in the nation, Nigerians must look beyond their current realities and embrace hope anew,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu also pleaded with Nigerians to celebrate the unity that defined the nation’s diversity.
“There is no challenge, obstacle or difficulty that we cannot overcome or surmount if we imbibe the nature of Christ who said in Matthew 11:28 that ‘come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest’.
“In times like these, all we do is to keep our hope alive, the lively hope which Jesus Christ has birthed in us,” she said.
The first lady also assured Nigerians that her husband had made wider consultations with the international community and investors to reposition the country.
Earlier, the President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Israel Akanji, who was the guest preacher, assured Nigerians of overcoming the numerous challenges facing the country.
While appreciating Mr Tinubu for his independence anniversary address to the nation, the cleric, however, appealed to him and other arms of government to ensure the fulfilment of the promises made to Nigerians.
He prayed that God would turn around the situation in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume appealed to Nigerians to remain patient.
Mr Akume said that measures were being put in place to cushion the plights of Nigerians, adding that some of the issues affecting the country cannot be resolved urgently as they had expected.
“Solutions to Nigeria’s complex problems can never be as instant as expected; it will take some time, but measures are already being put in place to address them.”
