FG To Dock Ex-CBN Gov, Emefiele Today On Alleged Economic Sabotage Criminal Charges

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, will today be put on trial by the Federal Government on alleged economic sabotage-related offences.

Emefiele, whose trial was aborted about 24 hours ago, will be arraigned at a High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

A notice for his trial before Justice Hamza Muazu, sighted by DAILY POST, indicates that the ex-CBN Governor will be docked along with one Ramalan Yaro.

A registrar with the court, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that Emefiele would be brought before the court this morning for his plea of guilty or not guilty to be taken.

Similarly, one of the lawyers in his defence team, Maxwell Opara, confirmed that the notice of arraignment had been served on the former CBN Governor for him to appear in court.

The former CBN governor will be produced in court by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Matthew Burkaa, who signed an undertaking to bring him for trial while being granted bail by Justice Olukayode Adegbola Adeniyi, also of the FCT High Court.

Court Remands Ex-CBN Gov, Godwin Emefiele In Kuje Prison

The High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory has ordered that the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, be remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his bail request.

Emefiele will remain in prison until November 22, when the court will deliver a ruling on his bail motion.

His lead counsel, Mathew Burkaa SAN, moved the application for bail which Rotimi Oyedepo vehemently opposed on behalf of the Federal Government.

After taking arguments for and against the application, Justice Hamza Muazu said a bench ruling could not be delivered in view of the plethora of authorities cited by the two parties.

The Judge said he needed a little time to study the authorities and peruse through the exhibits supplied by Emefiele to support his request for bail.

At the time of this report, officials of the Kuje prison authority have been contacted to bring a vehicle to convey him to prison.

Ex-CBN Gov, Emefiele Arraigned, Denies Corruption Charges

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, was finally arraigned on corruption charges by the Federal Government on Friday at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

Emefiele, dressed in blue Guinea Brocade babaringa with a Hausa cap to match, was brought to court for arraignment by his lead counsel Mathew Burkaa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, in compliance with an order of court.

The former apex bank head, who was accused of conferring corruption advantages on a staff of CBN, Mrs Saadat Ramalan Yaro, through awards of various contracts, however, denied the six count charges.

At the time of this report, a fierce legal battle was ongoing on the request for Emefiele’s bail pending his trial.

Justice Hamza Muazu is expected to make a ruling on the bail request.

Video: Mikel Obi Speaks About Entitlement Mentality In Africa

Mikel Obi has spoken about the entitlement mentality displayed by family members in Africa once a member of the family makes money.

During a chat with former footballer Rio Ferdinand, Obi revealed that family members become so greedy that they sometimes threaten to go to the press to tarnish your image if you don’t continue to offer financial assistance.

Using his own experience as an example, he said, “You get threatened by your own blood. Your own brothers and sisters.”

He continued: “When you come from Africa, when you make money, it’s not your money. You have all these relatives, cousins, whatever you call it.

“And your sisters, they go off and they get married to some guy who just wants to get married into John Obi Mikel’s family because then ‘my life is sorted’. And then you start looking after this guy. Before you know it… they keep having so many kids and so many kids. And you look at it, OK, ‘You’re having this much kids, who’s going to look after them?’ It’s you. For them you owe them that.

“So sometimes you have to be strong and say, you know what guys, ‘enough is enough. I don’t care’.

“They give you this thing whereby, ‘if you don’t do it, were going to go to the press’.”

His listeners were shocked and asked, “What? Did you have that conversation?”

Mikel replied, “Yeah, yeah.”
