Violent protest in Minna leads to arrest of 57-year-old Aisha Jibrin and 24 others
Aisha Jibrin, a 57-year-old woman, was arrested by the Niger State Police Command for instigating a violent protest over the increase in food prices in Minna Minneapolis on Monday.
The statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, PRO, Wasiu Abiodun stated that the protestors caused major obstruction on the highway, depriving motorists, travelers, and other road users from attending to their lawful businesses.
The group mobilized themselves in large numbers and blocked Minna-Bida road and Kpakungu Roundabout to protest against the increase in food prices on Monday.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations DCP Shehu Umar Didango led Police patrol teams to the scene, and after much persuasion, the protesters deliberately refused to clear the road for public use.
The Deputy Governor of Niger State Com. Yakubu Garba also addressed the group at the scene, but the protesters turned a deaf ear and became violent.
The Police adopted minimum force to disperse the violent protesters who attacked them with dangerous weapons such as stones, bottles, sticks, cutlasses, and damaged Police patrol vehicles and parts of the Kpakungu Division roof.
The Police arrested the protest initiator Aisha Jibrin, 30 years old, Fatima Aliyu, 57 years old, Fatima Isyaku, 43 years old, and 22 other miscreants.
Items recovered from them include a bench and a stick used as barricade, three knives, one scissors, one cutlass, one saw blade, one iron pipe, four other sticks, two wraps of Indian hemp, charms among others.
During interrogation, Aisha claimed that she was not aware that her action was illegal by mobilizing over one hundred women and miscreants to block the highway for a violent protest, and informed a youth leader in the area who failed to inform the Police of their plan to protest.
All suspects were taken to SCID Minna for investigation and will be charged to court for prosecution, with efforts ongoing to arrest other identified members of the violent protest.
