South Africa Denies Threats to Nigerians
Dispelling concerns, the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation has stated that there are no potential threats to Nigerians residing in or visiting the country, especially leading up to the CAF African Cup of Nations semi-finals match between the two nations.
This declaration comes in response to a statement released by the Nigeria High Commission in South Africa on Monday.
The Nigerian High Commission had cautioned the Nigerian community to be vigilant about their conduct, particularly in public spaces, during the upcoming match and to avoid engaging in loud or provocative celebrations if the Super Eagles emerge victorious. This advisory was prompted by “potentially inflammatory online comments made by a section of South African citizens against Nigerians living in the host country,” with the comments being “largely influenced” by the impending AFCON clash on Wednesday, February 7.
In rebuttal, South Africa’s DIRCO has contradicted the position of the Nigerian High Commission, asserting that the country does not pose a threat to Nigerian citizens, according to BBC reports on Tuesday.
DIRCO went on to express disapproval of the High Commission’s advisory, stating that it appears to instigate unnecessary tension between the citizens of both nations. The department remarked, “We are confident that the sports-loving nation of South Africa poses no threat to Nigerian citizens, and we do not agree with the apprehension expressed by the High Commission.”
South Africa further criticized the advisory as regrettable, noting that it seems to needlessly stir up anxiety and strain relations between South African citizens and Nigerians living in or visiting South Africa.
The encounter between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, Ivory Coast is scheduled for today at 6 p.m. (Nigerian time).
This match marks the fourth meeting between the two teams in the tournament, with the Eagles victorious in the three previous encounters.
