SURVIVAL BATTLE: VARSITIES HIKE TUITION, UNILORIN STUDENTS GROAN
A 300 level student of University of Ilorin, Kwara State, from department of History and International Studies, Jamiu Opeyemi has been facing different difficulties for many years to pay his tuition fee.
Jamiu Opeyemi was said to be sponsoring himself for many years now because, he have no one to reply on or to seek financial support/assistance from.
Jamiu said he has been sponsoring himself for years back but, find it difficult this time around to pay his tuition fees because of the increment in school fees.
He said he sent a message to the University of Ilorin, Unilorin Students Union President, Faji Tobiloba asking what would be done to the increment in tuition fees and the response he gave him then is that he should hold for about 72 hours after which he could proceed with payment.
But it was unfortunate that, the Students Union President was unable to reach positive resolution with the school management as regards the increment in school fees.
In our findings, I discovered that the SU president was absent at the committee meeting where the issue of increment in school fees was deliberated upon. It seems the tuition fee was increased in his absence and Only communicated to him after the committee take decision.
Jamiu said, “I have been sponsoring myself for years back now, it was hard for me to pay N26,000 and afraid of how to raise the new school fees N50,000 after the increment.
He added that, the Students Representative were helpless in this matter because they have nothing to do as they’re also Students and have to protect their studentship as well. He just have to give the directive to all students to proceed to payment of school fees after he his out of options.
My plan is to pay N30,000 approximately in this new session, but was surprised and shocked when he logged in to his school portal to discover that the school fees has been increased to N50,000 plus.
He said, he had to reach out to his benefactors to assist him to balance the school fees, when he ran out of options. Before I paid between N26,000 to N29,000 depending on the time I make the school payments, maybe is doing the normal registration period or late registration period, but now is between N50,550 to N51,550.
The increment in tuition fee decision has been reached already and the school management has extended the deadline for payment more than two times. I was told the school will add late registration charges when next the portal is open again for extension and that would be the last time the school will extend the registration deadline.
Apart from this school fees, hostel and accommodation and transport to campus are other issues entirely on there own. We are just struggling to survive in this school to survive.
The transportation issues alone is enough for some Students to said they want to drop out of school, talk less of this time around that they’ve increased the tuition fee. Am sure am not the only one in this shoes.
