Victory for Morocco against Zambia while Ivory Coast Reach the Last 16 by the Skin of Their Teeth
The 1-0 Africa Cup of Nations Group F victory over Zambia on Wednesday was secured by a goal from Hakim Ziyech, enabling hosts Ivory Coast to qualify for the last 16.
Despite being humbled 4-0 by Equatorial Guinea on Monday, Ivory Coast managed to qualify as one of the four highest-ranked third-placed teams.
Group winners Morocco will be up against South Africa in the round of 16, while the Democratic Republic of Congo, as runners-up, will face Egypt after drawing 0-0 with Tanzania.
Morocco’s coach Walid Regragui was banned for two matches following a post-match clash with DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba on Sunday and watched the match from the stand.
After a 1-1 draw, Regragui entered the pitch, appeared to have strong words with Mbemba and attempted to shake hands. The two had to be separated by several people.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation plans to appeal the suspension, considering it an “incomprehensible decision” as Regragui did not contravene the spirit of fair play.
Although Morocco and Zambia were playing their 73rd and 70th match respectively in the African competition, they have only met three times, with the Atlas Lions previously winning and drawing.
Captain and defender Romain Saiss was rested by the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists, and forward Youssef En-Nesyri started on the bench.
With Zambia captain Roderick Kabwe suspended, recalled Lubambo Musonda led Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets), and regular starters Fashion Sakala and Kings Kangwa were among the substitutes.
Morocco had already secured a last-16 place at the start of the final round group match, while Zambia needed at least a draw to advance at the expense of Ivory Coast.
As expected, the Moroccan team, ranked number one in Africa, quickly took control of territory and possession in the southwestern coastal city.
Zambia survived several scares before falling behind after 38 minutes, with goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga spilling a cross from Achraf Hakimi and Ziyech seizing the opportunity to score.
Moroccan winger Sofiane Boufal was cautioned by the Gabonese referee for diving in the area, seeking a penalty.
Ziyech, on loan to Galatasaray from Chelsea, did not return for the second half due to an injury and was replaced by Amine Adli.
With 20 minutes remaining, Zambia coach and former Chelsea and West Ham United manager Avram Grant introduced Sakala and Kangwa, hoping they could boost the chances of an equaliser.
