Survivor of Plateau Attacks Shares Heartbreaking Loss
A survivor of the Christmas Eve attacks on three communities in Plateau State has bravely shared the devastating loss of three of his family members in the tragic event. His identity has been kept anonymous, and he recounted his harrowing experience to a team of Middle Belt Patriots who visited Internally Displaced Persons camps in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin-Ladi on Wednesday.
The video of the visit and interview was shared by Kangyang Pwayok on Thursday.
The victim, a resident of Mangu community, recounted the tragic incident, revealing that the attackers mercilessly killed his mother and two brothers, one of whom was mutilated and left headless.
“On the 24th of December, around 7.30 pm or 7.45 pm, we started hearing relentless gunshots. The attackers forced everyone out. My mother, while attempting to escape, was struck by a bullet in the chest.
“Then, my younger brother was hacked with a machete, and my other brother, after being killed, was mutilated. We had to bury him without his head (sic),” he recounted.
He added that contrary to some reports implicating fellow Mangu residents, the attackers arrived in their village on over 30 motorcycles, indiscriminately killing people and setting houses ablaze.
Meanwhile, Kangyang Pwayong, part of the Middle Belt Patriots delegation, shared images depicting the dire living conditions in some of the IDP camps.
In one of the images, the IDPs were seen sleeping on the floor of classrooms that had been repurposed into makeshift camps for them.
According to Pwayok, the IDPs have been reliant on donations from individuals for food.
“They cook and eat once a day (sometimes they don’t even have food at all in a day) and depend on donations from individuals. Most of the parents had gone out to look for food when our team arrived so we met mostly children,” she posted.
It has been reported that over 150 individuals lost their lives and more than 10,000 were displaced in the December attacks, which have been likened by North Central governors to the Rwanda genocide.
Despite the Federal Government’s promise to bring the perpetrators to justice, the state governor, Caleb Muftwang, revealed that the attacks were well-coordinated and carried out with heavy weaponry, making it challenging to apprehend the masterminds.
