Recommendations from Ex-speakers: Price Control and Subsidies on Essential Commodities
A meeting of former Speakers of State Houses of Assembly of Nigeria took place in Adamawa State, wherein they suggested implementing price control mechanisms and subsidies for essential commodities as a means to alleviate the current hardship prevailing across the country.
Under the leadership of the former speaker and immediate past Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, the ex-speakers emphasized the urgent need for decisive measures to restore normalcy to the national economy.
A communique issued following the meeting and shared with the press stated, “Understanding the burden placed on citizens due to the rising cost of living, concerted efforts should be made to mitigate inflationary pressures through effective price control mechanisms, subsidies for essential commodities, and social welfare programs targeting vulnerable populations.”
Simon Lalong, the chairman of the ex-speakers conference, also highlighted the need to enhance infrastructure, particularly in the transportation and energy sectors, to reduce the cost of goods and services and improve the overall living standards of the citizens.
The conference expressed concern over the declining value of the Naira and urged the relevant authorities to find suitable solutions.
Furthermore, the communique advocated for prudent fiscal management, economic diversification, promotion of local production and entrepreneurship, and bolstering institutions responsible for monetary policies. It also emphasized implementing measures to attract foreign investments to foster economic growth and stabilize the exchange rate.
The meeting in Yola was attended by 125 former speakers, including the host governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, and the governors of Delta and Ebonyi States.
