Manchester City moves to the top as Haaland’s brace sinks Everton
Erling Haaland ended his goal drought since November, securing a 2-0 win for Manchester City against Everton, landing them at the top of the Premier League.
City, led by Pep Guardiola, struggled to break down Everton’s solid defense at a tense Etihad Stadium but Haaland’s late double restored the champions’ winning form since his return from a two-month absence due to a foot injury.
These goals were Haaland’s first in the Premier League since November 25 and his first in all competitions since November 28.
City’s return to the top of the table after three months means that Liverpool, trailing by one point in second place, could reclaim the summit if they win against Burnley at Anfield later on Saturday.
While City has secured victories in their last 10 games across all competitions, Guardiola might be wary of their laborious performance against struggling Everton.
This marked Everton’s fifth consecutive game without defeating City since 2017, and Guardiola had cautioned his players against lowering their guard based on the painful memories of a 1-1 draw against Everton last season.
Although City dominated possession in the first half, their struggle to break through Everton’s defense was evident, with multiple shots being blocked and Everton’s resolute tackling.
Guardiola’s anxiety was apparent as he constantly gestured to his players to improve their passing precision and speed.
As frustration mounted, City’s problems prompted Guardiola to introduce Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker early in the second half to inject some life into the team.
City finally broke the deadlock in the 71st minute when Haaland’s fierce strike, deflected off Pickford’s leg, triggered jubilant celebrations from the Norwegian and his teammates.
Following this, Haaland showcased his prowess, leaving Everton’s defender behind as he completed his 50th Premier League start in style with a calm finish past Pickford, securing the victory for City.
