Fire Destroys Anambra Timber Market
Two fire incidents recently ravaged the Timber Market in Nnewi and erupted behind the Sinai Gas Plant in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
Both blazes, occurring at different times on Tuesday, raged for several hours but were eventually quelled by the Anambra State Fire Service.
Anambra State Fire Chief, Martin Agbili, informed about the Nnewi Timber Market fire that began around 11:30 am and was battled until approximately 5:30 pm, while the fire near the Sinai Gas Plant in Awka broke out around 9:22 pm and was fought until about 10:41 pm.
Agbili stated, “At around 11:30 am on Tuesday, the Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call regarding a fire outbreak at the Timber Market, Nnewi.
“Immediately, we dispatched our fire trucks and courageous firefighters to the fire scene to combat, control, and extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire outbreak remains unknown, but it originated from a heap of sawdust, emitting smoke that enveloped the market. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
“Due to our firefighters’ timely intervention, the timber market was completely saved. The intense fire was battled until about 5:40 pm.”
Regarding the Awka fire incident behind the Sinai Gas Plant, Agbili remarked, “At approximately 9:22 pm on Tuesday, the Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call about a significant fire outbreak behind the SINAI Gas Plant in Awka.
“Immediately, we dispatched our fire truck and courageous firefighters to the fire scene, where we fought, controlled, and extinguished the fire.”
He disclosed that the fire, caused by unknown individuals burning bushes, stirred panic within the vicinity.
“During the firefighting operations, we managed to bring the fire under control, safeguarding the gas plant and preventing any loss of life.
“We withdrew from the fire scene around 10:41 pm after successfully fighting and containing the fire.”
“Clearing all bushes in our environment, especially during the dry season and harmattan, is crucial to avoid potential risks. We appreciate those who promptly alerted us.
“It’s important to remember that the response time is influenced by the time of distress calls,” Agbili emphasized.
