Eagles are poised to score against Cameroon, says Peseiro
Assuring the Super Eagles’ fans, head coach Jose Peseiro believes that his team will start scoring goals after securing a spot in the round of 16 of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Eagles, having qualified for the last 16, will be taking on Group C runners-up Cameroon and Peseiro expresses confidence that his side will find the net against them.
Nigeria’s progression to the tournament’s last 16 followed their second-place finish in the group, sealed with a 1-0 victory over Guinea Bissau in their final group stage game on Monday.
The solitary difference in the game came from an Opa Sangante’s 37th-minute own goal at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, marking Joseiro Peseiro’s side’s second win at the AFCON.
In the match against the Wild Dogs, the Eagles had five shots, none of which found the target. They followed up with seven shots (one on target) against Ivory Coast, with only one eventually converting into a goal.
During their 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria had 13 shots, seven on target, resulting in just one goal.
With only three goals scored from three group stage games, despite possessing one of the most potent attacks at the tournament, concerns have arisen among fans.
Looking ahead to their next match, the Portuguese tactician assured, “For the next match, we’re going to score.”
“It is important for us to score goals, but it’s a difficult tournament. We deserve to reach the first position because against Equatorial Guinea, we created many chances, but we didn’t score. Equatorial Guinea did not beat us, they drew us.
“I’m happy about that, and I’ll wait for the next match. It’s not easy to win one match in this competition. It’s not easy.”
“First objective attained! With two wins and one draw and with no goals conceded in the last two matches, we are in the last 16 of the AFCON.
“Next Saturday, we will be there with the same focus, determination and commitment so that we can move to the quarter-finals.”
