Ben Kalu Elected Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives
- The House of Representatives has unanimously nominated Hon Benjamin Kalu as the Deputy Speaker
- A motion for Kalu’s nomination was raised by Hon. Jimi Benson, who represents Ikorodu federal constituency in Lagos State
- Shortly after, Hon Khadija Ibrahim representing Damaturu/Gujba/Gulani /Tarmuwa federal constituency seconded the nomination
FCT, Abuja – Hon. Benjamin Okezie has been declared the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives for the 10th National Assembly. The lawmaker representing Bende federal constituency in Abia State was unopposed for the coveted position.
His nomination was raised by the Lagos state lawmaker representing Ikorodu federal constituency
Hon Babajimi Benson. Kalu’s nomination was then seconded by the Yobe State lawmaker representing the Damaturu/ Gujba / Gulani / Tarmuwa Hon Khadija Waziri Bukar Ibrahim.
Shortly after Hon Khadija seconded the motion for Kalu’s nomination, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass called on the nominated lawmaker to make known if he would accept the nomination or not.
Kalu said:
“Most distinguish Speaker of the 10th Assembly, the clerk of the National Assembly, the deputy clerk of the National Assembly, all former presiding and principal officers of the previous assemblies, my honorable colleagues and members-elect. “My name is Benjamin Okezie Kalu, I represent the good people of Nigeria starting from Bende federal constituency. Mr Speaker, honorable colleagues, I’m from Abia State and I arise to accept the nomination ably presented by Hon Jimi Benson and ably seconded by Hon Khadija. I so accept.”
Kalu will now take over the helm of affairs from Hon Idris Wase who deputised Hon Femi Gbajabiamila in the 9th National Assembly. Gbajabiamila is now the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu after taking over from Ibrahim Gambari who served under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
National Assembly Elects Jibrin Barau as New Deputy Senate President
Similarly, Senator Barau Jibrin from Kano state has been elected deputy Senate president of Nigeria unopposed.
Senator Dave Umahi nominated him, while Senator Saliu Mustapha seconded the motion. There was no counter-nomination, prompting the clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal, to declare him elected unopposed.
