We are not operating a secret account, NNPC debunks claims

Published

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd has come out to debunk claims of operating a secret account.

This was made known by the statement made by the company’s spokesperson, Muhammad Garba Deen, on Saturday.

The company referred to reports made to the House of Representatives ad hoc Committee set up to investigate “The structure, accountability and production sharing contracts of the NNPC from 1990 to date”, which allegedly found a hidden account that belongs to it as incorrect.

The report said the NNPC, directly or through its upstream arm, the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), does not operate secret accounts at all as said in the report.

The Joint Venture cash call accounts denominated in US Dollars and Nigerian Naira are all domiciled with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in line with the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy.

Joint Venture Proceeds Accounts were opened for the individual JVs to implement the Self-Funding Strategy, which aims at making the JVs to be self-reliant.

In a further clarification, NNPC said: “The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) is fully aware of the JVCC accounts as the OAGF regularly sanctions and approves the updates/change of signatories to the accounts. NNPC has documents where these correspondences with the OAGF were acknowledged.”

The NNPC/NAPIMS books of accounts in respect of the Federations Upstream Petroleum activities are audited annually by independent external auditors.

It also said the Office of the Auditor General for the Federation conducts periodic (yearly) checks of the activities of NNPC/NAPIMS. Also, the activities of NNPC/NAPIMS are audited yearly by the Nigerian Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

“Thus, with such multiple layers of checks and balances, it is impossible for the NNPCL to operate secret accounts until the ad hoc Committee, with due respect to its competencies, discovers it. If such a “secret account” does exist, then the NNPCL certainly is not aware of, and has absolutely nothing to do with it,” NNPC noted.

In an operation carried out by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, a top Boko Haram terrorist leader, Abu Asad, and several others were killed in air strikes on their stronghold in Tagoshe on the Mandara Mountains in Borno.

This was disclosed by Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Director, Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in a statement released on Saturday in Abuja.

Gabkwet described the air strikes, carried out on Friday, as one of the most successful in recent memory by the air component of Operation Hadin Kai.

He mentioned that NAF identified a group of terrorists in a remote location consisting of three zinced huts surrounded by trees.

The video footage showed the terrorists gathering at the site for either a well-planned meeting or a large attack on troops, he added.

More than 100 heavily armed terrorists were witnessed exchanging banter and milling around the structures, which also housed four army carriers, according to Gabkwet.

He also stated, “The aftermath of the air strike revealed that two out of the three structures, as well as the entire troop carriers, were destroyed.

“There are also indications that Abu Asad, a key figure in the Ali Ngulde group under Boko Haram, as well as other terrorists like Ibrahim Nakeeb, Mujaheed Dimtu, Mustafa Munzir, and several fighters were among the several terrorists eliminated in the air strike,” he said.

Bishop Kukah has expressed his concerns over the involvement of the judiciary and priests in politics.

Tinubu’s intervention can’t resolve Ondo APC crisis

Published

on

As the process of resolving the lingering political crisis in Ondo State is ongoing, the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has said the intervention of President Bola Tinubu could not resolve the crisis.

NewsNow reported earlier that  Tinubu had met with the leadership of the State House of Assembly and the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the state, at the State House, Abuja, late at night on Friday, in a bid to resolve the crisis.

The opposition party, through its Publicity Secretary, Mr Kennedy Peretei, described the meeting as a mere window dressing, stressing that if Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, does not return to the state, there won’t be any meaningful resolution of the crisis.

He said, “Let us pray that the presidential intervention will not go the way of the Bello Masari Reconciliation Committee set up by APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje. After several trips to Abuja at taxpayers’ expense, both parties returned to court after promising to withdraw all cases.

“Again, major stakeholders in the APC and Ondo State Government were at the Villa to iron out their intractable differences.

“From what we have read about the outcome, Tinubu’s intervention is a mere window dressing. Out of respect for his office, the impeachment of the Deputy Governor will no longer see the daylight, but as long as Akeredolu remains in hiding, it is not yet Uhuru, the cat and mouse race will continue.”
